Westlawn Named a Best Babies Zone
Earlier this month, Mayor Tom Barrett and the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County’s Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (Milwaukee LIHF) announced that Milwaukee is one of three new communities named to a national initiative aimed at reducing racial disparities in infant mortality. Called the Best Babies Zone Initiative (BBZ), the effort supports selected communities in developing innovative, place-based efforts to reduce racial inequities in infant mortality by mobilizing residents and partners to address the social and structural determinants of health. The Westlawn BBZ will be led by the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County and Mayor Barrett, along with partners that include the City of Milwaukee Health Department, Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, and the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. The Westlawn BBZ will leverage the work of Milwaukee LIHF, a community-wide collaborative dedicated to reducing the racial disparity in infant mortality, and the Choice Neighborhood Initiative.
